Research comes from AT&T who surveyed 2,500 people across five countries which
included Engineers, Architects, Designers, Doctors etc in Europe and reports
that 65% of respondents claimed that using social networks had made them or their
colleagues more efficient, 46% said it had sparked creativity.
So, as it goes according to the
survey reports, if we aren't using social media in this advancing digital era
to keep up with professional relationships and organizations, there is a risk
of being left behind and nobody wants to feel like an outcast for sure.
Social media
in the contemporary age has become an integral part of people's daily life and
therefore it is essential that an individual is actively involved in these
effective platforms in order to enhance their efficiency at work. The social media tools leverage creation of
a collaborative environment by initiating new conversations, and contributions.
Facebook,
LinkedIn, Youtube, Twitter etc are the appropriate channels that create awareness
about the world around you and the developments that are going on which help
you to remain updated with the ongoing trends.
Software
and IT engineers have aided in creating a great platform for an individual
which assists in connecting with various professionals to help recognize their
skills and apply for variety of jobs.
For
example, being an engineer you can join the various LinkedIn groups whose sole
purpose is to enhance the professional abilities of an individual. This will
help you to be in touch with the professional engineers who are working on big and
variety of projects.
They can guide you with their experiences and further stimulate
your growth and boost your performances.
Most of us identify professional development with formal degree and
training programs. However, the bigger part of the professional success story
is dependent on your Personal Learning Networks (PLNs). Social media also has
the ability to amplify your reach through expansion of PLNs, which can be aptly utilized for
enhancing one's professional growth.
Hence, in a global economy it wouldn't be wise to limit yourselves to
purely local connections. Your professional success will depend on how well you
are able to utilize different technological aids, social media and mobile being
the top amongst them, to increase your PLN.
If you are an engineering scholar or a management one PLNs can help you to identify areas of your interest and can provide
you with the premier knowledge required to enhance your I.Q and skill base.
Thus, to enhance proficiency an individual should use
each social network to its maximum potential.
Here are some key tips on how to
utilize the power of social media to boost your professional profile:
1. Follow industry leaders and innovative
thinkers on Twitter, and be selective.
2. Build connections on LinkedIn with peers
in your industry or who fall along your career path.
3. Read articles and stories, lots of them.
Take mental notes and apply learning.
4. Join relevant groups and have
conversations with real people which can help in problem
solving and also help to think outside the box through another vantage point.
5. Write for publications. Whenever you come across a great
publication on Facebook or Google, write for them and connect with your peers
in the industry.
We must always be thankful to the software and IT top engineers as all
the credit goes to them who made social media a reality and have provided a
mass connecting system which is having invigorating effects on the individuals.
At last, though Social media is a
very powerful tool, it also has its cons and can be used recklessly in ways of
which we are all aware of. However, if you own your brand and structure your
approach, it can also be extremely helpful to optimize career development and
enhance future opportunities.
