Stress is a reaction your body experiences as a result of a demanding circumstances or event that requires immediate action and attention. Stress management on the other hand is a process of controlling an individual's level of stress.
College requires significantly more efforts from students than high schools. Once you enter college , you will find that your fellow students are more motivated, your instructors are more demanding, the work is more difficult and you are expected to be more independent. These higher academic standards and expectations are even more evident in colleges. As a result of these new demands, it is common for college students to experience greater level of stress related to academics.
Many students find that they need to develop new skills in order to balance academic demands with a healthy lifestyle. A feeling of control and a healthy balance in your schedule is a necessary part of managing stress. Many students find that they can reduce their level of academic stress by improving skills such as time management, stress management and relaxation. • Putting off assignments or responsibilities until the last minute can create more mental and physical stress.
  • Avoid procrastination. It can affect many aspects of daily life such as the quality of your work, the quality of your sleep and your mood.
  • Physical activity can help you burn off the energy generated by stress.
  • Try mindfulness meditation; learn a variety of ways to work more skilfully with the stress and anxiety related to college life.
  • Pace yourself throughout the day taking regular breaks from work or other structural activities.
  • Realise that we all have limits. Learn to work within limits and set realistic expectations for yourself and others.
  • Find humour in your life, laughter can be a great tension reducer . Let's change the way we approach our management of stress with these tips and techniques to keep you swimming peacefully over the coming years. That is why it is said:
"Adopting the right attitude can convert a
negative stress into a positive one."
